6 Causes of Neck Pain on Left Side

The neck contains seven small vertebrae that run from the skull’s base to mid-neck allowing for rotation of the neck and head while providing a full range of motion for daily necessities. When we think about the neck and the wear and tear it goes through on a daily basis, it’s no wonder so many of us experience isolated or chronic pain.

These small yet mighty vertebrae are critical to living comfortably in our lives, so why do some of us have pain on the left side of our neck? Read on to find the most common reasons pain on the left side of the neck is experienced and how to make minor adjustments to alleviate the pain.

Poor posture is one of the leading causes of neck pain in American men and women. Think about the way you sit all day. Are you sitting in a chair? Are you using a computer and hunched over the screen? Perhaps you are a man or woman who lifts, moves and is active all day.

All of these activities mixed in with poor posture can lead to serious pain on the left side of the neck. Whether the neck is twisted or unsupported, adjustments in posture will assist in alleviating pain over time. Look into supportive chairs and waistbands that cause the spine to align straight and balanced.

Muscle tension and strain

Muscle tension and strain are two different yet common reasons men and women suffer from neck pain. We spend most of our lives sleeping, it’s true! And if you are sleeping on an outdated mattress or are sleeping in a position that causes neck strain, you might need to make some adjustments in order to feel better.

Along with regular adjustments, look into positions to support your neck to reduce strain on the muscles, tendons and vertebrae in your neck.

Whiplash from an accident

Major and minor car accidents can cause serious damage to your neck, especially from whiplash. If you have been in an accident and haven’t seen a doctor or chiropractor, go in and get an adjustment immediately and start feeling less tension and stiffness in your neck.

Sports injuries

Getting hit in the neck, back and head are causes for concern when it comes to injuries of the neck. If you have played competitive or recreational sports and are suffering from a neck injury on the left side, the impact or blow to the neck, back or head may be the leading cause of your pain. A simple adjustment will help you on the path to recovery.

Spinal stenosis

Along the left side of the neck live a multitude of very spell yet very important clusters of neural passages called foramen that are responsible for maintaining an open passage for nerve vessels and muscles. When spinal stenosis is experienced, there is pressure applied to the spine due to age, arthritis, bone depreciation or injury that causes nerve pain along the back and left side of the neck.

Fibromyalgia is a painful nerve condition when individual experiences isolated or general tenderness or pain in muscles, tissues, joints and nerves throughout the body. Leading causes of fibromyalgia include depression, stress, fatigue or infection.

No one wants a sore neck! It can be a condition that creates discomfort, sleepless nights and overall pain no matter the time or location of your daily or nightly activities.
