Chiropractic sports medicine is a beneficial treatment shown to increase performance potential and prevent injuries. Sports injuries vary, but they all result from the body’s ability to endure. The body, especially the spine, is a very important physical construction that contains tissues sensitive to pain including discs, nerves, joints, muscles, and ligaments. These tissues can experience abnormal alignment patterns due to repeated use, which can place an unusual amount of stress on individual tissues or many tissues simultaneously.

The body experiences impact and resistance no matter what the sport is, and performance can be affected by one’s speed, strength, flexibility, and coordination. Improper movement can induce vertebral subluxations that create principal areas of strain on the body that interfere with performance. The result is physical impairment for which an adjustment to the system can correct.

Athletes receiving regular chiropractic adjustments benefit from proper alignment and unobstructed movement, facilitating greater flexibility, an increase in blood flow, and enhanced performance. If and when injuries occur, adjustments help increase healing time from minor injuries.

Chiropractic and sports go hand in hand. Treatments offer a natural, drug-free method to treat current issues and prevent future issues.

Four common methods are used to treat athletes:

  1. Active Release Technique: Massage and stretching are combined along with moving the affected joint through a range of motion.
  2. Graston Technique: This method uses stainless steel tools to break down scar tissue.
  3. Electrical Muscle Stimulation: Muscle contraction caused by electricity is used to release tension.
  4. Functional Dry Needling: Trigger points are used to stimulate the release of tension in the muscles.

Chiropractic care can help athletes achieve an optimal level of performance. Athletes who are treated by chiropractors obtain unique performance advantages from specific treatment techniques, allowing a return to sport as soon as possible and enhanced skills.
