Children and Chiropractic Care – Important Things to Know

There are many health benefits to chiropractic care throughout one’s lifetime, including chiropractic care for children. Your child’s musculoskeletal system can be assessed early during pregnancy and birth, and problem areas can be treated in childhood to avoid costly and complicated problems in the future.

Chiropractic care is a safe and effective treatment for children of any age and helps improve sleep, and immune system function as reported by some parents.

Often, undiagnosed spinal problems begin early and are seen later in adults; even natural births can stress a newborn’s spine and nervous system. Spinal and cranial misalignment can cause many infant health complications including colic, nursing difficulties, breathing problems, sleep disturbances, chronic infections, and allergic reactions.

As your child grows and participates in childhood activities and sports, subluxations may occur leading to small, but significant spinal misalignments that can lead to more serious problems later in life. Misalignments may not result in immediate pain or symptoms, but routine chiropractic screenings can help identify potential problem areas before they become aggravated.

It is important to know that chiropractic care does not treat conditions or diseases, but instead diagnoses and corrects your child’s spine and surrounding bones and muscles to ensure they function properly. Protecting the spinal cord is very important; it carries neural information from the brain to the body and back again and is therefore vital to overall body function. Misalignments in the spine and vertebrae can interfere and interrupt the nervous systems ability to transmit this information.

The purpose of chiropractic treatment is to reduce stress on the spinal nerve, which is a painless disorder many children have, including adults.

Because the problem can be painless, it is difficult to detect or address early in childhood. The proper functioning of the spinal nerve can be interfered with stress and can weaken internal organs, lower resistance, reduce healing potential, and increase the likelihood of illness and further complications.

The natural healing ability of the body can be released through chiropractic care, providing the nervous system room for distressed joints and ligaments that can become tight and adversely affect the spine and joining bones. With this release, the immune system can function more efficiently and build up a better resistance to disease, resulting in improved mobility and greater independence. As your child grows into an adult, their body will be able to respond to external and internal environmental stresses such as germs, toxins, pollen, humidify, and temperature changes without causing damaging stress in the body. Reducing potential problems is an important step towards long-term health and wellness.

Disruption in the nerve system that controls and coordinates the body can affect circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative, and immune system function. Restoring these systems through chiropractic care can allow the body to be more flexible and aligned properly.

Adjusting your child’s body is an important procedure that requires a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal misalignments exist. Chiropractic care for children is tailored to fit their size, weight, and current spinal condition before making adjustments. Treatments for children are gentle and involve smaller corrections to safely and successfully realign your child’s skeletal system.

Parents are allowed and encouraged to be with their children during a chiropractic adjustment for their comfort and yours. Some parents often report that their children enjoy treatments and feel better after a visit.

Schedule your child’s chiropractic visit before it’s too late and more serious corrective methods have to be used to treat conditions. Children who receive chiropractic care early experience less musculoskeletal system complications later in life.
