Chiropractor Treatment for Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder impingement is a common ailment, and everyone has it, to some extent. It occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff rub against the acromion (roof of the shoulder). Daily activities that involve raising the arm above shoulder height cause this impingement and discomfort. The issue arises when there has been prolonged rotation, repetition or stress and the rotator cuff tendons become inflamed and damaged. Individuals with shoulder impingement cite shoulder aches, pain when raising the arm to the side or front, and even discomfort sleeping on the afflicted arm.

The common sign of this shoulder impingement is if any sharp pain results from trying to reach into your back pocket.

Chiropractors are able to test the mobility and condition of the shoulder to determine the extent of bursitis or tendinitis caused by the impingement. In conjunction with anti-inflammatory medication, resting the shoulder with ice will help the pain and swelling. A common next step, if this does not subdue the issue, is to undergo physical rehabilitation.

Your chiropractor will help to stretch the muscles, free up possible pinching or limitations in your shoulder, and improve range of motion.
